Who may submit a paper?
Anyone with knowledge or expertise in issues related to disaster
management and prevention What are the requirements
for papers?
Papers or presentation proposals should address research and policy
issues in disaster management and prevention while focusing on
the following thematic areas: • Strategy to develop
better mechanism of cooperation, networking and coordination of
actions among different stakeholders at the national and regional
level in preventing and managing disasters • Strategies
on developing effective national disaster plans • Strategies
on establishing emergency funds to support disaster relief operations
• Strategy and mechanism to improve our ability to monitor,
forecast, mitigate and respond to disasters at national and regional
levels. • Strategy for the creation of national and
regional high quality and accurate disaster database including
the framework for promoting community risk assessment. •
Strategy and potential solutions to substantially reduce death
toll from disasters • Strategy to share and document
information on good practices and lessons learned in the disaster
preparedness and management. • Strategy to promote
more effective integration of disaster reduction into the development
planning and policy at national and regional level
How will the papers be selected?
The papers and proposals will be reviewed by a group of peers
drawn from among the workshop’s organizers and sponsors.
The reviewers will consider technical quality (potential for
publication in a peer-reviewed journal); and diversity (contribution
to the diversity of presentations with respect to subject matter,
location, culture, ethnicity, and presenters).
The specific criteria to follow will include (not all will apply
to each paper):
• Relevance to workshop themes: Addresses central topics
of the subject area(s) of disaster management and prevention
• Originality: presents original ideas and perspective;
will contribute substantially to the workshop
• Partnering: Presents experiences or good and new practices
in establishing partnerships in addressing disasters by international
organizations, national governments, the private sector, civil
society, and/or local communities
• Quality: Demonstrates clear organization and effective
communication skills in English
How can a paper be submitted?
Complete the submission form (available at www.uccpuganda.org/disaster
by 10th October 2008 and email to the Secretariat at info@uccpuganda.org.
You may also fax the submission form to: +256-414-230748. The
outline or abstract may be up to 500 words, in English.
The Selection Committee will notify participants by 30th October
2008. Those accepted should submit their full papers by 20th
November 2008. The Selection Committee will reply with suggested
amendments and next steps by 27th November 2008. The Secretariat
of the International Workshop reserves the right to publish
all papers accepted for the workshop.
