A message from Chair of the Steering Committee
Welcome to the official website of the Civil Society Disaster Preparedness and Management Conference (CIDIPMAC), 2008. The twenty first century has already witnessed an increased frequency of the worst natural and man-made disasters all of which result in unprecedented deaths, destruction and displacement of communities. Most of these disasters can be managed once there is a new approach to utilization of scientific information and technical guidance to disaster preparedness.

There is also increased need by all relevant stakeholders to network and develop strategies for disaster preparedness. However, in most developing countries management of disasters, unfortunately, follows ‘a management by crisis’ approach. This is due to lack of planning, networking and seriousness on the part of the concerned.

It is against this background that UCCP has organized CIDIPMAC, 2008, to provide the first-of-the-kind forum for both researchers and practitioners in disaster-prevention and management, to assess their level of preparedness and how best to mitigate against future disasters.

CIDIPMAC, 2008 is an inter-disciplinary, civil society-led meeting to address the research and policy needs in promoting disaster management and prevention for sustainable development of disaster prone communities. It will also seek to identify collaborative mechanisms in promoting the same. All of the above steps are critical in providing solutions to this challenge. We therefore appeal to everybody with relevant experience and ability to join the global dialogue and send us relevant documents and papers for presentation.

Likewise we would appreciate your registration to attend and actively participate in CIDPMAC 2008,
At CIDIMAC, 2008, participants will share their experiences, brainstorm on the ways to support disaster prone communities to manage and prepare for disasters, to enhance sustainable development.

We warmly welcome you to CIDIPMAC, 2008 and look forward to your participation.

The Conference announcement contains additional information, as does the rest of the workshop web site.

Submissions of paper and presentation proposals will be accepted through 25th October 2008
